So... redundancy happens as a result I suppose. :P Oh well, still enjoyed the read. I will have to look into some of the anime you mentioned- thanks for the recomendations. Unfortunately, my problem right now is an overabundance of time and lack of people, so I think I can manage 11 episodes at the least ;)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4706976275349721778.post-30799821955618869562011-10-17T21:42:45.580-05:002011-10-17T21:42:45.580-05:00Oh, and as for writing up something on the merits ...Oh, and as for writing up something on the merits of roleplaying, there are people who have written far better treatises than I have. However, if you want me to give a shot at it I'd be more than happy to do so at a not-defined point in the future. Most of what I'd talk about wouldn't reference those other works. For the meantime, however, here's a link to The Escapist's commentaries on the merits of RPGs:
http://www.theescapist.com/resources.htmAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14494072388187342473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4706976275349721778.post-612164480702245812011-10-17T21:39:21.754-05:002011-10-17T21:39:21.754-05:00You've got some good points on American shows ...You've got some good points on American shows and anime that sound suspiciously like the Facebook discussion on this link. If you've had difficulty connecting to good plot-based anime I'd suggest starting out on Eden of the East. If that's not plot and character-based I don't know what is. It's also very short (11 episodes), so you can't say that you don't have time for it. If you have more time I'd suggest from either Clannad, Eureka 7, or Fullmetal Alchemist (the original or Brotherhood, doesn't matter. Both are very good), and work your way around from there. Honestly, I almost always go by recommendations from other people, although I've sometimes gone out and found my own anime and watched it. A few things that have been suggested to me that I'm currently watching (or am about to start watching) are:

Baccano!
Trigun
Guilty Crown

However in the hell I find the time to do iconography, schoolwork, RP, and maintain a relationship is beyond me, but apparently all things are possible with God ;)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14494072388187342473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4706976275349721778.post-11239489406340469982011-10-12T20:49:10.798-05:002011-10-12T20:49:10.798-05:00Interesting points. As someone who grew up in an environment where video games were at best considered a complete waste of time to being viewed as the cause of youth violence, D&D and rpgs were cults, and is STILL being asked when I will 'grow out of' my fantasy/rpg/video game phase, it is really refreshing to hear the other perspective! (Wow, was THAT run-on sentence of the year!) It can be rather frustrating trying to explain my interests to friends and family who are either concerned or feel like I'm too old for that kind of thing.

That being said, I have not jumped on the anime bandwagon...quite frankly I have not been exposed to much of it, and the few episodes I have seen involved lots of 'fan service' and seemed to have less plot than some of the American TV shows you mention. I disagree with the notion that just because a show has a Villian/Sickness of the week it has no merit. Star Trek for example, is one of my favourites, and yes, some episodes are better than others, and sometimes there is a Space Anomaly/Villian of the week format. But the show can be very thought provoking in some of the issues it raises as well. Just trying to say, don't completely write off any American TV. There is good, mediocre, and downright stupid (Jersey Shore/reality TV crap, I am looking at YOU!) Likewise, I am sure there is good, mediocre, and stupid anime.

You did give my inner psychologist a big goofy grin when I read the bit about video games and reality. I hadn't looked at video games from quite that perspective before, but it definitely makes sense. Doing certain actions in game CAN be rewarding, despite the fact that you yourself might not have actually gone out and saved that person, made that peace agreement, etc. It's important to keep a clear perspective, but doesn't mean it can't be a rewarding experience.

Now if you can just convince my family that I'm not sacrificing goats and small children in the basement, I'd be much obliged! ;)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
